The sandhill crane is a species of large crane of North America and extreme northeastern Siberia. The common name of this bird refers to habitat like that at the Platte River, on the edge of Nebraska's Sandhills on the American Great Plains.
Patience was the trick for getting this photo. I played hide-and-seek with this bird for two days. Each time I came by for a look, it would walk back into the trees, making it impossible to get a good photo. Finally, on day three I saw it in a small meadow close enough for me to snap a few shots before it went back under cover.
The photographer produced this image with a 5:7 aspect ratio to offer a faithful reproduction of the original scene. The size options available maintain this aspect ratio without cropping during the printing process.
