Mt. Rushmore, an iconic symbol of America. This is a 10 photo stack composite taken at night, after the lights were turned off in order to capture the stars as well as the soft warm glow supplied by the full moon rising an hour later.
You rarely see photos of Mt. Rushmore like this. Most photos are taken during the daytime. Nice? Yes, but all are pretty much the same – and not very dramatic. Photos taken after the lights go out – those are less frequent because it is a lot harder to do and get right. With the lights on, the contrast is too harsh. With the lights off it is very dark requiring long exposures.... except for those rare occasions when the moon just starts to rise after the lights go off.
There was one final challenge. I had to wait for the moonrise well after they turn out the lights. This made the security folks a bit nervous. I convinced them not to tow my vehicle from the parking lot.
The photographer produced this image with a 7:5 aspect ratio to offer a faithful reproduction of the original scene. The size options available maintain this aspect ratio without cropping during the printing process.
