Located a few miles east of Cody, WY the Bureau of Land Management has established the McCullough Peaks Wild Horse Herd Management Area. Severe fires in WA and OR during the summer of 2017 filled the northwestern skies with thick smoke for weeks. Normally, these conditions make taking photographs difficult.
I was late arriving in an area where there was a natural spring offering water for the herd, and hoped I had not missed them. I topped a hill and saw them heading away from the watering hole. I realized I had maybe 30 seconds to get out of the truck, set up my tripod and snap a dozen photos before they were out of sight. Shot in low light, I prayed I had good focus, correct exposure and no shake from the 700mm telephoto I was using. It wasn't until I got the photos on my computer and was able to examine them before I realized what a unique photo I had.
The photographer produced this image with a 5:7 aspect ratio to offer a faithful reproduction of the original scene. The size options available maintain this aspect ratio without cropping during the printing process.
